Before my most recent re-install of XP, I had similar problems to yours. One
way to speed up shutdown is to use the Windows SHUTDOWN.EXE utility. You can
find it in the WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 folder. Try running this directly and see if
it makes your shutdown go faster. If this takes care of your problem, you
may add a shortcut on your desktop or in a quicklaunch bar to make it
easier.
Let us know if this works for you.

My machine either won't shut down at all or it takes at least 5 minutes to
shut down so I know there is a problem. Can someone please point me in the
right direction to get this 2-1/2 week old PC back on track.
