Diane's post (clipped):-

<<< However,I would surmise that is not the issue at hand because despite performing a system restore, I was perplexed to find out I could barely boot my computer - -notwithstanding the fact I returned the settings back three months.>>>

IMHO the reason for this is the fact that "three months back" your norton antivirus was working fine whereas as of now it is in a (shall I say) partially uninstalled state and windows xp is unable to cope with this situation. I am sure all members will agree with me that NORTON in this state will cause infinite problems.

again IMHO you will have to decide on the course of action you wish to take and this obviously depends on one's expertise.

the options seem to be (I will have to leave the prioritisation to you except for saying DO NOT SHUT DOWN YOUR SYSTEM till you decide on the course of action--- if it hangs on its own just bad luck)

(1) back up all your data/reformat your hard disc/fresh install of operating system/access the back up.( IMO this is the best option)I assume you do have the operating system installation disk.

the hard/soft ware needs will depend on the size of your back up data and need to pay for both.

(2) do a repair install. I do not think this will work with the current state of your NORTON anti virus software... but other members may be able to help.

(3)COMPLETE removal of NORTON.--- this is a very tedious process (and even then one can not be 100% sure) there are "removal tools" at NORTON site and depends on the version you have.
the URL link is given below

http://tinyurl.com/6c4q8 (NOTE:- this link is courtsey Tom Mayer in his post of 1st oct 2005 at 22:09:41--0700)

here you may require a reboot but should be ok if NORTON is completely removed.

(4)attempt to remove any traces of the "worm" by trying the various sites recommended by some members in reply to the same subject.

hope this has been of some help but please do post if you require any further info/help.

good luck and good day----Venkat
