I've been following this thread and I find the common factor is Avast
combined with Zone Alarm.  I use Avast and Kerio Personal Firewall
and I can only recall two instances in the past year I've seen this
(I keep my computer on and DSL connected 24/7.)
So, maybe there's something going on between the two programs that
interfere with each other.
