My thanks to Sami and to Jim McKnew, who were the only two who offered any
help.
Unfortunately neither suggestion fixed my problems.
I did ultimately resolve BOTH problems by using the SCANREG program to
restore my fourth oldest backup.
Everything is now back to normal.
