Karen,

Right click on a blank spot on the desk top
Click on properties
Click on Appearance Tab
Under "Item" click the drop down arrow
Click on Icon
In the "Size" box......customize the size with a smaller number.

Play with it to get the exact size you wish.

  Well, After lost of help from this list, I was able to defragmatize my C
  drive.  Now, however, all the icons and everything is large. ;(

  What is an easy way to change the sizes of everything back to smaller?
