I discovered the same problem and have updated my Windows XP image to run the latest
version of adaware SE.

I believe that as much as 90% of spyware live in the cookies and temporary Interent files.
Therefore, in addition to installing adaware SE 2007, spybot 1.5 and spyware blaster
3.5.1, I configure Ilsystem wiper to delete temp files, cookies and history files
everytime the user logs off, shuts down or restarts the PC.

Other software for keeping the system clean and fast running include:
ccleaner and regseeker (select green only to safely clean registry)

Other factors include file system errors and fragmentation!

Of course, hijackthis is also quite useful to remove browser hijackers and other malware
in the Windows registry.

fyi spyware blaster only blocks spyware that enter via the browsers, IE and Firefox. It
does nothing to block spyware that install with software installations!

Also, I import a privacy file into IE. The contents of the file, ie_privacy_file.xml follows:

<!-- Internet Explorer - Privacy configuration file
  -->
- <!--                 JAP-Team [log in to unmask]
  -->
- <!--                  http://anon.inf.tu-dresden.de
  -->
- <MSIEPrivacy>
- <MSIEPrivacySettings formatVersion="6">
- <p3pCookiePolicy zone="internet">
  <firstParty noPolicyDefault="forceSession" noRuleDefault="forceSession" alwaysAllowSession="yes" />
  <thirdParty noPolicyDefault="reject" noRuleDefault="reject" alwaysAllowSession="no" />
  </p3pCookiePolicy>
  </MSIEPrivacySettings>
  <flushCookies />
  </MSIEPrivacy>

I also tell Firefox to drop cookies open closing, not to keep download or surfing history.
