Have you run Windows Update? I wonder if, perhaps, the effect was to
install an older version of DirectX over that which you had with Windows
95.
In a somewhat comparable situation (a game requiring DirectX 6 was
installed without DirectX 6), the person first had to install DirectX 6
(which you *should* get with Windows Update), then went to Control
Panel--System--Device Manager, located the Sound Card, clicked
Properties, and then clicked the Update Driver button.
