Thanks, Dave and Bill.

I muddled through last night downloading some free Amazon books, and 
figured out the basics.

Then, I Googled, "iPad Kindle App Instructions,"  and got a link to the 
Amazon site where they had a thirteen page set of instructions for the 
App!!   You would think that they would have referenced the instruction 
set in their docs file, but they didn't.

We're up and running on both of our iPads, set up to share the 
downloads.  Works fairly well!
