Hi Ann,

Mouse and keyboard problems are relatively easy to fix.
Most of the time it's a bad or intermittent connection or in the case of a
cordless/wireless mouse, it could be the battery.
In case of a ballmouse - seldom used these days- it might need cleaning.
You didn't say what kind of mouse you have, but you may try the following:

1.Wired mouse with PS2 connector:Just unplug from the back and plug back in.
If no luck, try a PS2 to USB adapter and plug into a USB port.
If still no luck, try it on another computer if available or go to a local computer
store to have them check it - as a goodwill gesture they'll do it no charge.
If it fails - just make sure you see them test it ;) - get another one while you're
there.

2.Wired mouse with USB connector.Try the plug/unplug method as in #1 or try a
different USB port. You could also try a USB to PS2 adapter, but if still no luck,
the same advice as in #1.

3.Wireless mouse - somewhat more complicated ,since you've introduced another
component, being the USB transmit/receive module. The same principles apply though.
check the battery in the mouse. For the module, check another USB port.
Sometimes the drivers for the module don't load or are corrupted by another software
installation and may have to be re-installed.
Uninstall those drivers via Device Manager -then reinstall - most of the time a
reboot will re-detect the module and install it.Use the supplied drivers from floppy
or CD if needed or install updated drivers if needed.

In general though, you don't need any special drivers, especially wired mouse ones.
Basic functions are taken care of by Windows mouse driver.Any extra functions would
come as software with the mouse. They would be subject to updates though, but even if
none are installed, basic mouse functions would still exist.

Hope this helps.
Peter E.

The mouse won't move for no apparent reason. It did it this once before & I went to
Safe mode, when the mouse would work & when I restarted the computer, it worked in
Regular mode also. Not so lucky this time. I tried Safe, and device manager to no
avail. Restarting & changing mice also does nothing.

XP SP2
Dell 4300

Thank you kindly, Ann
