Hi Greg,
The methods described in this article ,mirror the ones I would have
recommended, were it not for the existence of this (rather old ,but still
valid) article.
Page File, Event Viewer log check and UPH Clean. I always found UPH Clean to
speed up XP shutdown.

Also check Task Manager for extra ,maybe unnecessary services running.

40% free space on a 60gb hdd. nothing out of the ordinary running in my
system tray AVG is the only program and everything is updated. I keep my
start-up folder empty because I feel if I need something I will start it
when I need it.
