David,

On UNIX systems, there is a free program called "traceroute" that you can get
(some UNIX systems include it), which will map the hops to a destination, along
with the average latency at each hop. This type of info can help you determine
which sites are "closer".

There is a real nice shareware program for Windows called "ping plotter" which
is a graphical traceroute. Go to http://www.nessoft.com/pingplotter
