Is there a utility to repair corrupted MS Word documents
so as to retain as much of the formatting as possible?

A friend of mine (why do these people come to _me_ with
their problems :-) has deleted over 1000 Word 6 files,
and then undeleted (most of) them.

(It's not entirely her fault: it's two technicians working
on the same PC and one moving, not copying, the files and
the other deleting the "spare" copy - arrgh!)

She is now trying to open them in Word 97 and some will
not open, or show binary formatting data instead of the
properly formatted page.

She has a workaround in that many of the docs are fax messages
keyed directly into a fax cover sheet template, so it is
possible to open them in Notepad or Wordpad and cut and paste
the text only into a fresh template.

However, there are rather a lot of damaged files and some of
them may be more complex documents, so does anyone know of
something more automatic and more complete?
