You should always back up the registry before doing anything to
it. Generally, RegClean is a very safe program, unless one tries
to use earlier versions on a system which includes IE4.
There are many ways to back up the registry, depending on
what software you have and how nervous you are. The following
is easy and is safe enough:
(Part of this was pasted from an answer Jim Meagher wrote when
we were all young).
1. Open a dos window.
2. Type attrib -h -s c:\windows\user.dat (and enter)
3. Type attrib -h -s c:\windows\system.dat (and enter)
4. Minimize the dos window
5. Use Windows drag-and-drop to COPY the files user.dat and
system.dat to someplace you'll remember, e.g., your desktop.
Be careful to COPY, not "move".
6. Switch back to your dos window
7. Type attrib +h +s c:\windows\user.dat (and enter)
8. Type attrib +h +s c:\windows\system.dat (and enter)
9. Close the dos window.
10. After a few days, you'll probably want to move your 2 old
backup files to someplace more convenient for long-term
storage.
Thank you.
