We're talking about Outlook (Or Outlook Express) vs. Thunderbird.
Internet Explorer is a web browser.
It sounds to me as though you want to "Start Over", so the best thing
might be to install Thunderbird without importing anything. Pay
attention during the install process to see this choice.
You'll still have access to the old stuff by just opening your
previous email program (Outlook Express?).
The best choice might be to disable the old account in OE so it
doesn't "Send/Receive" when you access the old stuff.
Alternatively, you could organize the old stuff prior to importing,
but it sounds as though you don't want to tackle that at the moment.

From time to time, I cull -- but far too little is removed. And I haven't established a rational system for classifying and storing. From time to time, I've determined that "I'll want to get at that one more carefully, but later. There isn't time right now." And I've sometimes flagged the message, sometimes marked it to "appear unread" (thus to show up bold in the list).
