Thanks, Earl. I did this and all of the lines of asterisks in the document
turned into dotted lines - so I changed it back and they reverted.

I have discovered that if I type a line of asterisks and then hit Enter,
the line now turns into a dotted line.[This is fairly recent] Then if I
immediately hit Backspace, the dotted line turns back into asterisks and
everything is hunky dory.

Another option as mentioned earlier is to avoid hitting Enter at the end of
the line of asterisks - and, instead, click on some other part of the
document with the mouse. The result is a line of asterisks and no dotted line.

Still is a pain.
