I'll assume that you have already closed down any obviously running
programs,
like word processors, web browsers, etc..

1. Right-click your mouse when it is positioned over one of the items in the
system tray (the rectangular area at the right-hand end of the task bar
[where
the start button is]), then, on the menu that appears, left-click on exit,
close,
end, or whatever shut-down option shows. <<Not all of the icons here will
have
an exit option.>> Close down all of these that you can in this manner.

2. To close down programs that may be running 'in the background', hold down
the ctrl + alt keys, then press delete. This will bring up a box titled
"Close
Program". A list of all running programs appears in the central box.
"Explorer"
and "Systray" SHOULD NOT be closed down. They ARE Windows, so to speak.
Highlight any other programs (This can only be done one-at-a-time.), then
left-click
on "End Task". Continue in this manner until you see only Explorer and
Systray
left in the Close Program window. <<Some programs will pop up a gray screen
at the upper left-hand area of the desktop with a "This program is not
responding..."
message. Just click "End Task" in that screen.>>
