James,
I started many years ago with Quicken 2 and upgraded many times
in that version before "crossing over" to Quickbooks and ultimately
progressing up to Quickbooks PRO 5 -- all done with no problems.
(I figured I was a fairly loyal customer with all those upgrades.
So when I received a letter telling me that as a "valued customer"
I could get a whole $20 discount off of the outrageously overpriced
version 6 "upgrade", I hit the wall....
they ain'ta gonna be gettin' no mo o' mah money.)
I would assume that version 6 will install exactly the same as
every other "upgrade" has....
When you install the new version, it will detect the old version
and will give you a choice to install over top of the old one or
install to a separate directory. If you install over the older
version, then all your data will be protected and available in
the newer version. BUT.....just to make sure, use the BACKUP
feature in the old program before you upgrade.
Because you are making such a big jump (version 3 to 6) there will
probably be quite a few NEW settings that you will need to tend to,
but the basic configuration settings from the old version should
migrate up to the newer version. AND... the data file will more
than likely go through a conversion process as soon as you
open the file in the new version. (another good reason
for backing up the data before beginning.)
