I don't know if this will help, but you might need to explore
this possibility. You mentioned you had 2 V.90 modems; one an X2
and one a Kflex. I have read (in various publications) that the
"former" modem standard/status does have an effect on V.90
performance, and that before buying X2 or Kflex-based V.90
modems, it is wise to find out what "version" of 56K modems are
in use by the ISP of your choice. Apparently, if your ISP is X2
(V.90) and you connect with a Kflex (V.90), the best you can
expect is 28.8K or 33.6K. If this is the case with 'bound' modems
making the connection, it could be a cause for erratic
performance.
