  Susan, I was also running IE 5.5 with WindowsME.  I upgraded to IE 6.0 about a week ago since it is now out of beta.  I had no problems with the download or the installation - and it also updated my Outlook Express at the same time and I didn't lose any mail or anything.  I think there are enough pluses to it to make it worthwhile to upgrade.
