Nicholas asked what program generates (ie creates/saves) PCX files.
There have been a lot of replies telling him which programs can
read/open/use a PCX file, but I don't believe that anyone has identified
the actual originator of the format or said which programs can SAVE AS.
The PCX format comes from a DOS program called PC Paintbrush which was
developed by ZSoft in 1984 (or 83?). I think that this company was bought
up by MS and the program magically reappeared as the MS PAINT program
included with DOS version 5 (or was that 4?)
That seems to be Bill Gates' main method of developing new products --
just go out and buy a company. Which probably explains why no one
reeeeealllly understands the inner workings of Windows -- it's got a lot
of separately developed technologies all held together with bubble gum and
rubber bands. But enough of my opinions <grin>, back to the question at
hand.......
Paint Shop Pro is capable of saving files in the PCS format and
GraphicsWorkshop can convert from many different graphic formats into a
PCx file (and vice-versa). And there are probably other programs that can
convert or SAVE AS.
