I would like to know how this is done. the suggestion about the external USB drive sounds too good to be true.

Wish I'd thought of it. 
        Note: you do not necessarily have to take your computer apart. 
        Also, taking your computer apart may not work if your newer motherboard does not support IDE drive connections.

An alternative is to purchase an inexpensive case that lets you create an external USB drive from your old hard drive.
