Hi Bill
Don't download that file unless you have an "Alpha" processor in your
computer. (Digital Equipment's Alpha CPU is not compatible with Intel
x86 processors.) The files ending in "i" are for Intel versions of NT4.
Since we are on PCSOFT, I assume you use an Intel platform computer.
The file <ftp://198.105.232.37/fixes/usa/nt40/ussp4/INDEX.TXT>
explains what the various files are for:
128-bit.txt How to obtain the 128-bit version of SP4
Index.txt This file
Nt4sp4a.exe The Traditional Download (International English 40-bit)
installs all fixes for Windows NT and Windows NT Option
Pack. (Alpha)
Nt4sp4i.exe The Traditional Download (International English 40-bit)
installs all fixes for Windows NT and Windows NT Option
Pack. (x86)
Nt4sym4a.exe Traditional SP4 Download Symbols (Alpha)
Nt4sym4i.exe Traditional SP4 Download Symbols (x86)
Nt4y2k4a.exe Year 2000 SP4 includes the Traditional Download and also
detects and upgrades Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1, Microsoft
Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.0 Service Pack 1, and/or
Site Server Express 3.0 (if earlier versions exist on the
system) to resolve known Year 2000 issues on your Windows
NT 4.0 system. (Alpha)
Nt4y2k4i.exe Year 2000 SP4 includes the Traditional Download and also
detects and upgrades Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1, Microsoft
Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.0 Service Pack 1, and/or
Site Server Express 3.0 (if earlier versions exist on the
system) to resolve known Year 2000 issues on your Windows
NT 4.0 system. (x86)
Readme.txt 40-bit Readme.txt file
Readme128.txt 128-bit Readme.txt file
Y2k.txt Year 2000 SP4 Download Readme.txt File
Y2ktest.txt Year 2000 SP4 Inspection Utility Readme.txt File
Y2ktesta.exe Year 2000 SP4 Inspection Utility (Alpha)
Y2ktesti.exe Year 2000 SP4 Inspection Utility (x86)
Get ftp://198.105.232.37/fixes/usa/nt40/ussp4/NT4SP4I.EXE if you
are using NT4 Workstation or NT4 Server without extra Microsoft
software (Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.0 Service Pack 1,
and/or Site Server Express 3.0). Of course, if you are using IE4 with
SP1, then the larger service pack
<ftp://198.105.232.37/fixes/usa/nt40/ussp4/NT4Y2K4I.EXE>
will update that, but you could do that seperately and save time by not
downloading fixes for all the other stuff.
The Symbol files are for use if you want to do system level debugging
of NT4 applications. (If you don't know how to do this, see the
appropriate MS Knowledge Base articles. Or skip the Symbol files.)
The "40 bit version" refers to the level of encryption used by
Internet Explorer 4 and other networking parts of NT4. 128 bit
encryption is much more secure but you must convince Microsoft
that you are in the US or Canada before they will let you download
the 128 bit service pack.
<http://www.zdnet.com/windows/wpro/doctornt/19980924.html> explains
what NT4 SP4 does more briefly than the file
<ftp://198.105.232.37/fixes/usa/nt40/ussp4/README.TXT>.
Regards,
Bill
