Bob,

You mentioned quite a few settings which are all related to your problem,
but you did not mention one of the main ones.....

Under TOOLS - OPTIONS - GENERAL  is the option to
   CHECK FOR NEW MESSAGES EVERY xx MINUTES.
This must be active for the "autoretrieve" function to work.
