Rick,
  Are you sure that you are holding the ALT key down while you are
typing 1 5 6 . Only works with the num pad and the num lock on. You can
get all kinds of special symbols. Find an ASCII table and use the
decimal numbers listed i.e. 156 for £ ( I just generated this by typing
156 on the num pad while holding down the ALT key).
