Hi Bob,

From all indications, it does appear to be caused by a conflict with one of
the Windows updates. Do not uninstall the updates. Instead, I suggest one of
two possible solutions. First, if you want to stay with ZoneAlarm, try
previous versions working backward until one works. If you don't have any on
file, there are several at http://oldversion.com/ (one version 5.5 and three
versions of 6). I have copies of two versions of 5 and seven versions of 6.
I would not recommend a version previous to 5. ZoneAlarm has had similar
problems before so hopefully they will release a program update soon.

My second suggestion, and the easiest, is to switch to another firewall
until the problem is solved. Of the free firewalls, I recommend Comodo. I
was using ZoneAlarm but after trying Comodo, I've been impressed and will
continue with it. Here is a link to the site along with a very good review
by PC magazine:

Comodo Personal Firewall 2.0 review by PC Magazine:

Computer Security - Comodo Free Personal Firewall:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Rather than competing with anyone, I think Microsoft's intent for adding a
basic firewall was for the purpose of providing some form of security from
the hazards of the Internet to the beginner in computing, and to those who
simply aren't aware of the dangers lurking there. Some form of protection
until they 'get their feet wet', so to speak. Unfortunately, some don't
realize their feet are wet until there's nothing above water but their head.

A good third party firewall is an absolute necessity. Neither a hardware
firewall (router) or the Windows firewall prevents anything on your computer
(Trojans, spyware, dialers, etc.) from accessing the Internet.

Have a safe trip... on the road, in the air, and on the Internet!

Hello Sven,
Thank you for the quick response. I hadn't been to the ZoneAlarm forum. I
followed the procedure that was suggested there and, unfortunately, it
didn't fix my problem. Now there has been a further development. In
preparation for a trip, I got my laptop out. I updated and ran AdAware and
Spybot. Then I installed recent Windows updates. I installed all except IE7
and the Windows Genuine Advantage. Now my laptop has the same connection
problem when ZoneAlarm is active. So I assume the problem came with an XP
update of the last few months, which conflicts with something else, likely
my ZoneAlarm, ZoneAlarm settings, etc. I know that some others have the same
problem because I've read of it in the Newsgroups, but no solution yet.

Now that you have made me aware of the ZoneAlarm forum, I see others there
who seem to have the same problem, losing connectivity, with ZoneAlarm
activated, but after reading all the posts, I have seen no solution. Perhaps
my problem could be fixed by uninstalling some Windows updates. I have never
done that, but would try it if it allowed me to connect while still using a
firewall. Or maybe by installing a previous version of ZoneAlarm. Since
Microsoft now has it's own firewall, I assume Microsoft and ZoneAlarm are
competitors and may be not anxious to make the other company's product work
well.

Again, thanks for all the help you provide. Remember that when you provide a
solution for one person, many others read it and benefit from it. Best
regards Bob
