Greetings Sven, Carol, & list--
It is possible to "turn off" the e-mail checking service in Avast! AntiVirus. If you
right click on the System Tray icon, you will see a configuration screen which will allow you to set the sensitivity of each running service, as well as turn on or off the different services (IM, e-mail, resident, etc.). With respect to AVG, I believe the company rep was correct, because messages I receive from users of AVG have the "message has been scanned..." tag line and show up as having an attachment.
