Folks,

I've resolved the problem, though I can't say what caused it.

I ran winnt32.exe from the Win2k CD and chose the "Update existing
operating system" selection. This installed Windows 2000 on top of
the existing Win2k install, thereby reinstalling.

This ultimately solved the problem.

I can't say what caused the problem, but my gut tells me this was
registry corruption. Here's why I say that:

1. When I installed OfficeXP to test if _any_ Office product could
work, I received an error that it hadn't been installed for the
"current user," even though I had installed it under the built in
Administrator account. (Creating a new Administrator account actually
allowed OfficeXP to work, but this did not fix Office 2000.)

2. When I tried to open Word after I encountered the initial error,
it brought up a strange-looking Windows installer box that asked for
a NAV2002 CD. What was odd is the drop down menu stated, use
installation in "[LABEL] Product Name."

3. During the re-install, while COM+ was being re-registered, the
installer asked _again_ for the NAV2002 CD. The same "[LABEL] Product
Name" still appeared. I fed it the NAV CD anyway and installation
continued.

After reinstall, Outlook reported that the registry entries for
Office were missing. An Office repair fixed that.

I think, in retrospect, that had I fed it the NAV CD when Word asked
for it, I might have been able to recover without the re-install, but
there was VERY little collateral damage from the re-install.
