It worked! MSIE6.0 is installed and operating perfectly on my system.

I did exactly what you recommended above.  First, however, I had to use
MSCONFIG to disable the shortcut that kept trying to install MSIE6.
Until I did that, Windows would not let me install IE5.5SR2.  After
disabling the shortcut, I downloaded and installed IE5.5SR2 without a
hitch.  Then, I downloaded and installed IE6 without any difficulty at
all.
