I do it as follows:
1  Right click AVG icon in lower right tray
2  Click "Run AVG Control Panel"
3  Select "Update Manager" Tab
4  Click "Update Now" button
5  When update is complete, click OK
I find my updates are automatically placed in a folder called:
C:\program files\grisoft\avg6\update
