This is usually the result of the computer having been hacked through one
of IE's many security vulnerabilities.
IE relies on showdoc.dll and several other helper .Dll files to display
pages. Probably one of these has been removed or reverted to a different
version in removing the other stuff, or more likely has lost its registry
associations.
Additionally, a lot of people seem to have had a lot of problems with ME.
First, if your friend has registry backups (ERU), do a registry restore.
That's often easiest for most problems like this, and averts the
shortcomings of System Restore.
Or you could try re-registering the essential .dll's (there's a list of
about 6 of them available somewhere, but I don't have it handy) by running
Regsvr32, if you are familiar with it.
Otherwise try running Control Panel/Add/Remove and click Microdsoft IE.
That should then show an option to repair. Try that.
Else reinstall ME over the top, it should replace any missing files while
retaining all your settings. Can't say for sure, as I've no experience with ME.
