Regarding your first post:
some years back I used the compression software that came with Dos to
compress 1.44 floppy disks. It seems that you would get more on your disk
using that method. I recall that I had to call Microsoft to find out how to
use the compression program for the floppy. If you dicide to try this
method, I will find the information and forward it to you. Once I started to
use the Zip disk, I forgot how to use the comprssion programs.

That's not exactly correct.
Standard disks in a standard drive can be formatted at higher levels
(1 point 7 something meg) with the correct software.
