Avast tries to update at various times, and if you are not connected to the Internet you get that message. If you have a DSL or cable connection you will see that if you disconnect from the Internet as I do when I step away from my computer for a while. I turn off the connection between the Internet and my little home network. Often when I get back there will be the red error message.
