Thanks for the response Linda. I tried the two suggestions you had but
neither of them worked. I wonder if the customized IE5 from my ISP has
caused the problem. That may be one place to go.

Your mention of file wuv3is.dll was helpful. I did a search on the MS
support site using this as a keyword and came up with a long and involved
article that may be useful to all who are having this problem. The article
is Q193657, "Troubleshooting Windows Update Connection and Download
Problems". Guess I'll laboriously go through that.
