The Scanner [or ANY device in the daisy chain] MUST be powered up at boot in
order for all the devices to be seen. Also there may be some settings in the
scanner driver that allow devices "downstream" to be seen. I know parallel
port scanners fake the system out and use the port as if it were a slow SCSI
port, perhaps yours is doing the same thing.
