Everick, there are two, distinctly different 'Messengers' that cause problems in Windows XP.

I'll cover 'Microsoft Messenger' or 'MSN Messenger' first as it's the one you refer to in your post. It seems to be used mostly as a chat medium by children and teenagers. Adults are always asking me to turn it off. However, eradicating MSN Messenger is not always simple. The first things to try are these:

1. Go to Control Panel, Add\Remove Programs, Add\Remove Windows Components and uncheck MSN Explorer and Windows Messenger. OK and close.

2. In Outlook Express, click Options on the Tools menu. On the General tab, clear the 'Automatically log on to Windows Messenger' check box. OK out. Reboot and see how things look.

If the above didn't work for you, try renaming C:\Program Files\Messenger to something else like ..\Program Files\NoMessenger. If you later need Messenger, rename the folder back to its original name.

If this didn't work either, you'll need to get serious. Go to Start\Run and type this:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

This method is expanded here:
http://sniptools.com/vault/uninstall-and-remove-msn-messenger.htm
and here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=288

Then there's 'Windows Messenger' which was devised by Microsoft to be used in inter-computer communications. Here's a couple of snips from this article http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/33654.html:

<snip>
Windows Messenger service, a function used to exchange data between computers.....has become more trouble than its worth in recent months since spammers latched onto the service as a way of launching pop-up spam boxes on targeted PCs.......Microsoft has issued a patch but even so, the problem is another black mark against a not-terribly-useful service...... So Microsoft has decided to turn off Messenger services with Windows XP Service Pack 2, due in the first half of next year....
<snip>

See what Doug Knox has to say about disabling Windows Messenger here: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger_remove.htm

And Steve Gibson here:
http://www.grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

But for a more thorough solution, download and implement the very sensible and simple instructions in the document 'XPServices.zip' from http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm to rid yourself of not only Windows Messenger, but also a lot of other stuff that runs behind the scenes in XP, consuming processor time and computer resources.

I suggest you print out the document first and follow the 'SAFE' options. As I said earlier, the system has been well researched, it's not hard to follow and I can confirm that the tweaks work.

  Subject: [PCSOFT] can I get rid of Microsoft messenger

  Hi

  My daughter used to use a hotmail account on my puter, but has since
  discontinued that “hotmail” email address and signed up with another “free”
  email service.

  However, the messenger icon still show up in my system tray, and when I
  attempt to close it I can’t.

  Can I delete ms-messenger. I don’t use it and I don’t like it. I believe
  that when it’s running in sys tray, it uses up memory which another
  application could use.

               The NOSPIN Group Promotions is now offering
              Mandrake Linux or Red Hat Linux CD sets along
             with the OpenOffice CD... at a great price!!!
