Many thanks to all who responded.  since Peter's suggestion to rename the first 9 slides to  a01, a02,......a09,  THEN leave the rest as a10, a11,....
seemed to involve less work went in for it and it WORKED.

the other suggestions may also work and will experiment one of these days.

obviously different programmers have different idiosyncracies because " IRFAN VIEW" loads them ok as a1, a2, ......a100.
