Another possibility is the way AOL encodes images in it's 4.0 mailer.  For
some reason when an AOL user sends inline images (not as attachments) it is
either changed or stripped out completely before leaving the AOL system.  I
have never been able to recieve an inline image from an aol user.

The reason could be that he attaches a picture as URL link as his signature,
and
your mailer for some reason can't get the picture (for example if you
read your mail offline, as most people with dial-up connections do).
