I have the strangest problem and have no idea where it came form and how to
fix it.

I have a 2-computer "network" at home - my desktop (running Win2k) and my
laptop (running 98SE). They are connected via an Ether link hub (not a
router). TCP/IP and NetBEUI are enabled on both as is file and print sharing
etc.

Up till today, all worked just fine regarding file and printer sharing. The
today, my laptop decided that it needed a network password to be able to
access any resources on my desktop PC.

From the PC (Win2K), if I go into Network Places, click Computers Near Me
etc, I see the icon for the laptop, and I can clock it and I can see the
file shares that I have set up there. So that direction works perfectly.

In reverse however, i.e. from the laptop (Win98SE), if I go into Network
Neighborhood, I can see the icon for my PC (so it is recognized), but as
soon as I click that icon I get a dialogue box that pops up that has in its
title bar "Enter Network Password" and a message that reads

"You must supply a password to make this connection".

Resource: \\PC-name\IPC$

Password: (blank, waiting for me to fill in a password.

No matter what I fill in here, it says it is incorrect. To the best of my
knowledge, I have never set up a password to access the PC form the laptop.
The password used for specific file shares does not work. The logon password
does not work. No password works, and I cannot find any way on the PC to
disable the password that up until to day I never was prompted for anyway,
and to the best of my knowledge never set up in the first place.

I tried to rename the *.pwl file on the laptop so it could be regenerated
from scratch, but that did not solve the problem.

Something has changed, yet as far as I know, nothing was tampered with,
altered, updated, re-installed etc.

Anyone have a clue as to what has happened, and of course more importantly,
how do I get from my laptop to my PC?

Michael
