Many Thanks to Don for his suggestion, and just in case anyone else has run
into this, here's what I discovered.

Using OptiX (MSConfig would do the same), I eliminated those programs
starting with "startup," selecting those I suspected as possible culprits.
From this process it seems that OmniPage 11, an excellent OCR program,
starts opware.exe and apparently for some reason it loads Word 2000
(winword.exe) in memory.  While I have 512 of RAM, I still prefer not to
have programs I don't need using my resources and RAM.

So, thanks again to Don for his excellent suggestion.
