Hello all,
Today I just bought Norton Systemworks and in addition to the Norton
Utilities, Crashguard, and Antivirus etc, it came (in Canada at least) with
a bonus CD that contained, among other things, an uninstaller program called
Remove-IT 98.
I have looked on the Symantec.com website, and curiously, I can find no
mention of Remove-it 98 anywhere on their site! Under Systemworks, they
indeed show this bonus offer that I bought, but they indicate that the bonus
pack contains all the other programs I got, but no mention of Remove-It....
I looked up a press release, and found a December-dated release from Toronto
talking about Symantec Systemworks now including a product called Norton
Cleansweep 4.5. Not Remove-It, but Cleansweep (which was always a
Quarterdeck trademark).
In fact, Remove-it looks suspiciously like an updated version of
Quarterdeck's Cleansweep (which I also own and have used for years). The
Cleansweep function called install monitor is represented in the Norton
Remove-it version by a utility that in fact is a Quarterdeck Service
manager.
I remember vaguely about a patent infringement suit that forced Symantec to
withdraw it Systemworks earlier in the year, but can't remember the details.
Did the infringement revolve around an uninstall utility? Has Norton taken
over the Quarterdeck program? Why does this version seem to be available in
Canada and not the US? Is Norton Cleansweep the same as Quarterdeck
Cleansweep, and is either one of these Remove-It 98?
I am terribly confused. Can anyone tell me more about this Remove-it 98? I
don't need both Cleansweep 3.0 and Remove-it 98, but would like to know
which one is likely to be the better, more durable and long-lived product.
Many thanks to those that can unconfuse me ;)
Michael
