I think what you want is the DOSKEY command which, when inserted in your
autoexec.bat file allows you to recall previous DOS commands and execute
them again without having to retype the line. It's and internal command with
some options you may want to consider. Here's how I have mine coded:

c:\windows\command\doskey /bufsize=512 /insert

I used a space before each slash (/).

The /bufsize option allows you to increase the size of the environment space
The /insert option puts the cursor into edit/insert mode for recalled lines.
In other words, you can insert characters within the line rather than having
to retype from the cursor position onward. You can specifically use
/overstrike instead but I think overstrike is the default anyway if you
haven't used the /insert option specifically. So there is no advantage using
it as far as I can see.

There is one other option that may have use for you. It is the /dhist
command. I've never used it but I believe that when used, if you hit the UP
arrow, it will give you a list of all previous dos commands used in the
current dos session.

Oh, by the way, to recall previous dos commands entered at the command
prompt, use the UP arrow.
