I agree with Marc. Distrowatch is a great place to start.
I run SuSE 8.2 (Personal use) and Windows (for work). For
transitional ease Lycoris is great. I had built a Lycoris machine for
my wife who just wants a computer to work, she does not care how. She
had been using Windows exclusively through Win 2000, and had no
problems at all with the transition.
Mandrake, SuSE and Redhat may require a little more effort and
patience with the learning curve but I find that half the fun.
