Screen savers work just fine on LCD monitors. The argument could have been
that a screen saver was not needed, but today's CRT monitors don't really
need a screen saver either! Old design monitors used to have phosphor
burn-in if a steady image was presented. Today, a screen saver is only for
entertainment value. To save energy and the monitor, you should have it go
into standby mode, but then you would not see those neat designs!
Keeping the monitor on all day would potentially use up the backlight
sooner. I don't know what the life expectancy of the backlight on LCD
displays is, but it must be quite long.

I friend of mine has an LCD Monitor and was told that she can't use a
screen saver. That doesn't sound right to me. Also, does it harm her
monitor to be left on all day?
