I use a shareware program called Vault to do much the same thing.  It's sort
of a database program that lets you set up an outline with categories and
subtopics and store information.  I keep tech info, tips , FAQ's, all sorts
of things.  It has a search function.  To me it's much more suited and
easier to use for this than something like Access.  You can find it at
