Thanks for your suggestion; I got around to trying the recovery disc option but found it was in this case a dead end. What finally worked, although a very lengthy procedure, was to return to the Gnome Partition Editor and have it move the C drive back to the left on its window showing the HDD partitions. I wonder whether Disk Manager in WinXP would have done this more quickly, but am happy to be back where I started.
