I use NS 7.1 all the time. I carry some very large stored mail files.
Some are as big as 157mb. I have four e-mail accounts I check every
minute for new mail. I also have NS set to compact folder when it
reaches so much. That is when I have trouble. During compacting NS does
not like to do anything else. If I do ask it to view mail most times it
will lock-up on viewing different mail but I just have to close the mail
client and restart it. Starts working just fine.

I don't send a lot of pictures but I do send at least 10 or so a week.
Most of my stuff is text and html e-mail. Lately I have been moving big
pdf files around and that has been fine. Sorry I can't help more but I
will watch out for it.
