I am the MIS guy at work, and ran into this same problem there.  I found out
that since installing IE4.01 and using Active desktop on a few clients they
would hang.  I removed active desktop and that worked on 2.  I then found a
message here that recommended that I disconnect any network drives before
shutdown.  That works every time on all clients.
