I downloaded a multi purpose codec converter, videolan's  vlc 0.8,4a-win32videolan, into my C drive. Must i do something more to get it to work?

When I try to download  AVI or Divx files I still get the same " searching for codec" message. One time I got audio with no video. Should I be activating the videolan somehow first,and then downloading through it? Or should I be taking the file from "briefcase" where I store it and applying the converter to it somehow?
