JPEG is OK for the final form of the picture (when embedding in a web page or
where its only intent is viewing.) This is because JPEG loses information from
its original content.
GIF is better for archival storage where the image may need to be recalled and
manipulated again or re-converted to another format. GIF is compressed, but
there is no loss of information, and will take more space on disk than JPEG, but
if you need to be able to recall the EXACT image, then this is the one to use.
