Last week I had the same problem loading IE 6 SP1 and/or Windows Update (XP
Home system). After spending 10 hours, I called Microsoft and spent $35
(later refunded), and they had me do the usual (unnecessary) stuff such as
reinstall XP. It occurred to me that Norton was loading (for some reason)
with IE, checked NAV (2003), and lo and behold, screen showed last scan not
completed. Removed NAV, and IE/Windows Update ran great. Reinstalled NAV,
and no problems. It would take 33 minutes (not exagerrating) to load
Windows Update and 8 minutes for IE to load. Check your NAV screen to see
if there are any problem noted. It's easy enough to uninstall and reinstall
reather than go the reinstall XP route.
